The Harbor Freight Survival Bag

The Harbor Freight Survival Bag

The Harbor Freight Survival Bag

This amazing survival bag was put together at Harbor Freight Tools.  The concept is going to one retailer to put an entire kit together and this one was done for about $200.

Check out the video to get the entire breakdown.

Transcript of The Harbor Freight Survival Bag below

once I’m here from everyday tactical
vids and today we’re looking at a car
emergency survival kit and all the items
in this kit were purchased at Harbor
Freight tools you may have seen some of
our other videos like the Walmart bug
out bag video the lowest survival bucket
video and also the Home Depot urban
survival kit video and the concept
behind these videos is can you go to one
retailer and buy everything you would
need for the kit or the bug out bag that
you’re making the cost for this kit was
right around $200 and I will tell you
that this one was a bit more challenging
than some of the other kits I’ve made
because the Harbor Freight stores I went
to had no food or water
so no sodas no water you know in a
cooler by the cashier no snacks nothing
like that so if you built this type of
kit from harbor freight tools you’re
going to want to supplement it with some
sort of food and water from another
retailer the last thing I’ll tell you is
that for me when I build a bag like this
I have this as my emergency items kit
and then I have a separate bag or box or
container as items for repairing issues
going on with the car so it may be extra
fuses extra oil things like that I
generally have two different setups one
emergency bag like this and then another
box or crate or some sort of container
holding emergency items specifically for
repairing a car as we start off here
you’ll see that there are some items on
the outside what I’ve done is I’ve said
basically for me the items that I use
the most I want to have them the most
easily accessible so I I find that I’m
using a tape measure often I’m using
sunglasses or protective glasses and a
folding knife so that’s why I left these
on the outside side as opposed to
putting them on the inside so what we’ve
got are some protective glasses so these
are safety glasses but they’re also
tinted so you can use them as sunglasses
I do have a tape measure here and you
can use this for whatever purposes might
come up this is a 16 foot tape measure
and then the last is a folding knife I
usually have a knife on me at all times
I have a bigger knife in here that
you’ll see in a moment but this is a
folding knife that you can get at Harbor
Freight nothing super special around
seven dollars but you could you know if
you get out of the car and you forgot to
you know where your EDC night for the
day you could throw this into a pocket
quite easily and now you have your EDC
blade on you up top here you can see I
have a set of kneepads and this is great
for a variety of different uses if
you’re out in the winter and you got to
get you know say your shovel and some
ice or snow out from under the car you
can be wearing these if you have to get
under the car in any kind of weather and
you’re going to be on concrete this
could be a way to protect your knees
certainly on the outside here there are
three more pockets and I’ve got see if I
can get these out it’s a little bit
tough because they’re in there so snugly
but I’ve got some 35 or 33 gallon trash
bags I’ve got one two three one here
than two and this and then over in this
section I have some of these they’re
kind of like ShamWow type cloths and
these are good for you know just wiping
sweat or general cleanup and I have the
all this stuff accessible on the outside
down on the end I’ve got a couple other
things I do have an emergency whistle
that I picked up I have two Sharpie like
markers they’re not exactly sharpies but
it’s what they sell at Harbor Freight
and then I have one of these little key
knives and it doesn’t fold away as
nicely as the SOG version does because
you can still see the blade the back of
the blade is kind of sticking out there
but I have this knife on the outside
which is a EDC knife I have this tiny
little knife and then I have a larger
knife inside but again I want to keep
these things like the emergency whistle
and the Pens accessible immediately
because if some situation comes up we’re
going to take notes quickly now I’ve got
that and I’ve also got the emergency
whistle obviously if I need to get
somebody’s attention I can grab that
without having to dig through the bag
okay going into the main section of the
bag first you can see I have a bunch of
heavy-duty zip ties and I’ll show you
how to actually use these at the end
when I show you how I secure the whole
kind of kit together some of those this
is a little cargo net it’s it’s elastic
so it’s kind of like you know shock cord
bungee cord and it’s made for
motorcycles so you can put a helmet on
the back your bike and then you can
strap this down you know say when you go
into a store or something but I thought
this would be great because the nets are
just useful for a lot of things so if
you found something that you wanted to
attach to your bag you could put it on
top of the bag and then put this around
it and just general use to have this
type of cord
is helpful got these little hooks here
that’s that do have a variety of
different lights here just a very basic
flashlight there is another one that
came with this set
okay came in – a set of two for maybe
like four dollars or something like that
so we have that got some very bright
cordage here that did not carry 550 cord
so I went with something that was
compact and yet visible so I got that
these are some particle respirators dust
masks basically in case you come to a
situation where there’s lots of stuff in
the air I do have a 10-foot extension
cord and this has the three prongs one
edition I might add is that you know to
get a converter so if you did just find
a two prong outlet you could still plug
this in but this is a more heavy-duty
one than something you’re just going to
plug like a floor lamp in to have a
bunch of zip ties this is more than I
need but this was the size of the pack
it came just with a ton of them so I
just put a couple zip ties around them
and I’ve used those to secure some of
the different items in here as well I do
have a drop cloth this is 13 feet by 16
feet and a lot of different uses for
this I was thinking primarily if you had
to filter some sort of water you could
use this you can certainly throw it down
on the ground if you had to you know
collect something or throw a bunch of
things into it because it is white if
you have to do something that has any
great detail you can work over this so
if you drop things you’ll see it on this
as opposed to dropping it on the ground
drop cloth super glue I just kept these
in the package because it’s easier than
them maybe getting busted or falling out
but three different little sticks of
super glue this was interesting this was
the best option they had when it comes
to storing water or some sort of you
know drinkable liquid if you you know
you had Gatorade or whatever would say
but these comes it comes in a three pack
I kept them in this pack since they’re
all tight and organized like this but
they didn’t have any metal container
that I could boil say water in to help
start the purifying process the best
thing I could find was actually a large
metal gasoline container and it was like
a 20 or 15 gallon container I just
thought that’s totally excessive it’s
huge
so this was the best option I could find
at Harbor Freight tools when I came to
storing water and I’ll talk in a minute
about a water collection option that I
found or I thought of when I was
thinking about that so that’s for your
water another one of those kind of
ShamWow cloths you have in here this is
a bright emergency vest so if I have to
walk down the road or do something I
will be much more visible you have a
sharpening stone and I’ll show you the
other knife as I mentioned down at the
bottom here and this is a medium grit
stone this is one of the big comments
people made from some of the other
survival kits you need a sharpening
stone so definitely put one in good idea
I do have a magnesium block and a Ferro
rod it does come with this little
striker you could use the knife or
something else if you want to do that
but there’s your option to start some
fire I have a tarp in here and this is
like a six by eight or maybe nine by six
tarp all cinch down so that it’s as
compact as it can be and this is
certainly usable for shelter but also if
you need to get under the car without
getting all wet or you have to work on
something outside you can put this down
to avoid getting yourself all soaked 50
yards of duct tape million uses for that
do have electrical tape as well I find
that sometimes duct tape is good and
sometimes electrical tape is good most
the time I like duct tape but I do find
this can be useful for some other things
have a little pry bar here down in the
bottom this is another recommendation
from I believe the Home Depot urban
survival kit people said you shatter
some sort of primer in so thanks for
those thoughts I did that and then we
have a axe here it’s 1.25 pounds and
because of the back here the palm I can
use as a hammer as well and then
obviously your your cutting edge over
here we have a headlamp and you’ll see I
have a variety of different lighting
options just because if something breaks
I definitely have a backup one so this
takes three triple A’s so another option
for light I do have a reflective mirror
and then I have some disposable ear
plugs if you’re in a situation where say
you’re stuck in a
in a place where there’s a lot of noise
and it’s going to be that way for a
while nice to have these to drown out
some of that noise and then down in the
bottom here I have some this is wire for
hanging pictures but a variety of uses
for for this type of wire spinning it
around to the other side I’ve got some
double-a batteries so I’ve got this I
also have some triple A’s which I’ll
show you in a minute
very basic rain slicker this is also
give you some visibility if you have to
be out in the rain pair of gloves
western safety don’t know anything about
the company but these were kind of the
middle of the line they had some very
cheap ones and then some more expensive
and these seem to be kind of right down
the middle so I chose these gloves I do
have this is um a magnifying you need
something to put in your eye if you were
looking at jewelry or something so it’s
a magnifying lens and it’s a ten power
so you could definitely use this to get
a fire going over here I’ve got some
wd-40 this is a screwdriver you can see
it’s got the Philips head here and then
there’s a flat head inside you can swap
around a couple different options as far
as your sizes this is your basics vise
grip style tool this is made by
Pittsburgh it’s a company that does a
lot of work with harbor freight tools
good for a lot of different things just
general repairs some needlenose pliers
triple-a batteries I was mentioning
before so I’ve got double a’s and triple
a’s and over here I’ve got a is out
there we go there’s a crank flashlight
so this is like the Husky one that I
have in my other kit but you crank this
and then let it light up for you and
this is always a good option to have
something like this it’s very basic but
if your batteries die out or whatever it
is you’ve got a light that can still
work and then as I mentioned before that
blue light had a another matching one
that was red and so here’s another
flashlight so I’ve got the headlamp two
of these and then crank light as well
and that’s it for the inside
than this mammoth beast which is the
survival knife that you can get I think
this was like 9 bucks or something a
very basic sheath but it gets the job
done and then I still have this wrapped
in the plastic that came in but look at
the size of this thing I mean compared
to my arm even Rambo style here I’m not
expecting this to you know be the
highest quality product for 9 bucks but
inside there are some some items as well
I’ll show you that in a minute
but I do have a smaller knife now a big
knife at burly to hack at something I
can certainly use this to do some some
pretty basic cutting I want to be
careful because I don’t think it’s going
to be the sturdiest knife out there I
did have a small saw in here but I
decided because I have the ax and
because I have this probably between
those two things I could do whatever
cutting I needed to do all right let’s
show you what’s inside the handle here
here’s what you have inside the handle
of the survival knife there’s a compass
on the bottom there seems to work
decently moves around you just got to
tilt a little bit to get it to free up
and then in this little plastic bag you
have some matches a sewing kit get some
fishing line and one fishing hook and
then you have your striker for your
matches three more items I want to show
to you that don’t actually fit into the
bag but I’m going to attach them to the
bag and I’ll show you how to do that in
a moment we’ve got a shovel up on the
top there lots of uses for that in
particular I always think of since I
live in New Hampshire you know snow ice
getting stuck onto the car you can use
that to dig out we also have a heavier
drop cloth here and this could certainly
be used for warmth if you got stranded
for a while you can wrap this around
yourself a couple times or you know
around a couple people to maintain at
least a little bit of warmth it is a
little bit more compact here because I
put those two zip ties on it and then
over here we have a container and inside
is a sponge and this is just something
that you would use you can see you can
rest a paintbrush there but the reason I
got this is because since there’s no way
to purify water easily there’s no like
metal container that you could collect
water and then boil water and what you
can do and this is an easy way to
collect water that is generally quite
clean is that you can use a sponge to
collect do in the morning off grass
trees whatever it might be
squeeze it into here and now you’ve got
a container that you can actually drink
out of it’s easier to take this and just
squeeze this into this than it is to
some of those into one of those three
small kind of squirt containers that I
had before so this is an option for
collecting water it’s not the most
perfect option but when it comes to what
hardware Freight
offered thought this could be a nice
addition to the to the kit so here’s
what it looks like all put together you
can see with the shovel on there I’ve
got the knee pads on top I’ve actually
used some zip ties to attach a bunch of
these things and what I did was I put a
small hole in this cup over here and
I’ve attached it to the keyring on the
end
at this point now you could grab the the
bag you can still get your hand under
the handle there and then you know take
it out of the car if you had to leave
the car behind for some reason if you
had to just get the bag out and walk up
the road to be you know helping out with
the situation
you’ve got a you’ve got this all kind of
in one kit together you could also very
relatively easily take out that folding
knife cut some of the zip ties and leave
some of these items behind but at least
now we have all the items together it’s
not going to be like you’re going to go
into your car and because of you know
drive it around for a couple weeks
things have rolled around or spread out
in the car it’s all in one kit together
and it’s all attached so there you go
the survival kit was built from just one
store and that’s harbor freight tools as
I said earlier this one was a little bit
more challenging just because of the
selection that was available at Harbor
Freight but it does go to show that if
you have to run out and throw together
an emergency kit you know for your car
your house whatever it might be you can
do it relatively quickly by going to
just one store you’re not going to get
all the best items that you could ever
want but you can get a basic kit
together that will provide some
assistance if an emergency or survival
situation pops up let’s get the
conversation started you can leave your
